Description

#1672- A 2.17 x 1.6 x 1-inch specimen of iridescent Hematite/Turgite from Graves Mountain in Lincoln County, Georgia.ย  This specimen features blue, green and purple iridescence.ย  This location is one of the southeast United States prime mineral collecting locations.ย  Iridescent hematite at Graves Mountain, Georgia,ย formed from the oxidation of pyrite, which was hydrothermally deposited during a period of metamorphism. The mountain’s original volcanic rocks were transformed by heat and pressure from continental collisions into a silica- and aluminum-rich deposit. Later, hydrothermal activity created veins and crystals of minerals like pyrite, which subsequently weathered to form the iridescent hematite/goethite mixture, also known asย turgite.ย
