#3055 – A Pecopteris arborescens Fern Fossil in Shale from Cory’s Lane Prospect, Portsmouth, Rhode Island.  Fern leaf cluster 1.57 x .4 inches in size on a shiny graphitic Shale. The geologic origin of fern fossils in shale from Portsmouth, RI, dates back to the Pennsylvanian Period (approximately 306 million years ago) in the ancient Narragansett Basin.
