Description

#3197 – A 3.35 x 2.48 x 1 – inch agatized Coral specimen from the Withlacoochee River, Lowndes County, Georgia.  This incredible has golden tan agatized stalactite like growths inside the cavity.  A true beauty to marvel.  Agatized coral from the Withlacoochee River in Lowndes County, Georgia, originated from ancient marine coral colonies that were buried in sediment and subsequently replaced by silica, forming a fossilized, agate-like structure. The process likely involved the coral’s original calcium carbonate skeleton being dissolved and replaced by silica-rich groundwater, preserving the coral’s intricate form within a chalcedony (agate) pseudomorph. The corals are roughly 35 million years old, originating from the Oligocene-Miocene Epochs.
