Description
#3203 – A 2.75 x 1.77 x 1.57 – inch specimen of Calcite on Limestone.ย This specimen is from the Caldwell Stone Quarry in Danville, Kentucky.ย The specimen features white frosted dogtooth Calcite crystals up to .7 inches in size. The Calcite crystals fluoresce a light reddish pink under UV light.ย ย This specimen was collected in 1996.ย Calcite at the Caldwell Stone Quarry originated from two main geological processes:ย as a primary component of the Ordovician-eraย limestoneย bedrock, formed from the skeletal remains of ancient marine organisms in a shallow sea, and as a secondary mineral deposited inย veins and fissuresย within that limestone, often associated with tectonic faulting. These secondary deposits, such as the well-known “Walker vein,” formed when mineral-rich groundwater flowed through fractures, precipitating calcite and other minerals like fluorite and barite.ย
