Description

#3189 – A 3.12 x 2.5 x 2.5 -inch mineral specimen of dark purple Amethyst Quartz on Basalt from Artigas, Uruguay.  The amethyst geodes in Artigas, Uruguay, are a result of hydrothermal alteration, where hot water and dissolved minerals circulate through rocks, dissolving minerals and carrying them away.  When the water cools, the minerals precipitate out of solution and form new minerals, including amethyst crystals.
