Description
#1797 – A .87 x .79 x .71 -inch reddish black Andradite Garnet crystal mounted on a slab-mount display from the Kayes Region of Mali. Andradite garnets from the Kayes Region, Mali, originated from contact metamorphism, where igneous intrusions altered nearby carbonate rocks to form skarns. The garnets form within these skarns through a process of metasomatism, with the resulting crystals found in both the original metamorphic rock and in later alluvial deposits where they have been transported by rivers.
